Privacy policy

Last updated 18 October 2026

SalamGuide is built to need as little about you as possible. This policy explains what the app and this website collect, why, and how to have it deleted.

In short

Using the app as a guest

As a guest we don't ask for your name, email or phone number. Your settings and anything you save stay on your phone.

Your location

If you allow it, the app reads your location to work out prayer times and the Qibla direction, and to find masjids and restaurants near you. To do that it sends your approximate coordinates with each request to our server and to the Aladhan prayer times service (aladhan.com).

We use the coordinates to answer that request. We don't attach them to an account or build a location history. Our server's error logs record requests, coordinates included, for up to 90 days so we can fix problems.

If you don't allow location, you can choose a city instead. You can change this at any time in your phone's settings.

If you create an account

WhatWhy
Email address and nameTo sign you in and identify your account
Phone number, if you give oneOptional; only used to contact you about your account
Password, stored as a one-way hashTo sign you in. We can't read your password
Saved placesSo your favourite masjids, businesses and events follow you between devices
Event RSVPsTo remember which events you said you'd attend
Places you suggest, with your emailTo check the suggestion and follow up with you about it

Stored on your phone

Your settings, chosen city, collections and prayer reminders are kept on your phone and aren't sent to us. As a guest, your saved places and RSVPs stay on your phone too.

Prayer, Jumu'ah, Ramadan and Eid reminders are scheduled by your phone itself. We don't run a push notification service and don't collect a device token.

This website

salamguide.org sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to Google, which receives your IP address as part of that request. Our hosting provider, Netlify, keeps standard server logs to keep the site running.

What we don't do

Who processes your data

We use a small number of providers who process data only to run the service for us:

ProviderWhat forWhere
Microsoft AzureRuns our server and its logsUnited Kingdom
MongoDB AtlasHosts our databaseUnited States
Aladhan (aladhan.com)Calculates prayer times from coordinatesOutside the UK
NetlifyHosts this websiteUnited States

Where data goes outside the UK, we rely on the safeguards UK data protection law requires, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or an adequacy decision.

When you open directions, call a place or follow a delivery link, the app hands you over to that app or website. Its own privacy policy applies from then on.

Under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018) we rely on:

How long we keep it

Your rights

You have the right to ask for a copy of your data, to correct it, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable format. Email development@salamguide.org and we'll reply within one month.

If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. We'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.

Deleting your data

Delete your account in the app under Profile, Settings, Delete account. This removes your account, saved places, collections, RSVPs, reviews and submissions from our servers straight away. To clear what's stored on your phone, delete the app. See Delete your account for other ways.

Children

SalamGuide isn't aimed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has given us their details, email us and we'll delete them.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If a change significantly affects how we use your data, we'll tell you in the app.
